Home Remodeling Ideas

Remodeling your home can add significant value to your property and most home improvement jobs can be done by yourself to save money. Here is a simple list of basic steps you should take before you chose to remodel your home. You want to make sure you do all your research before remodeling your home, or else you could end up with a halfway-completed project.

First step in remodeling your home is planning out what exactly you want to remodel. This should be done before you call in any contractors. If you don’t know how you want your new house to look, it will be impossible to begin. Be very specific when planning what you want to remodel, such as the kitchen appliances, not just “remodel the kitchen”. The more specific you are the better of an idea you are going to have as to how much its going to cost, and where to begin.

Next thing before doing any home improvement is to think about the future. Are the improvements to your house that you do now going to benefit you in the future? If you are planning on selling your home will the improvements you made add to the resale value of the property?

Finally, think about money. Even with a planned budget your home remodeling project is likely to cost more then you think. Make sure you have enough money saved to cover any additional expenses that you may have. Things can and usually do wrong, and nothings worse then have to stop a home improvement project because money is thin.

These are just the first steps to consider when remodeling your home, but they are very important ones. Remodeling your home is not only an investment in the properties future, it’s a place where you are going to live and feel comfortable.

Remodeling a Home Office

So its time to remodel your home office? Remodeling your home office can be a great way to be more productive in your everyday work. Your home office should not only be a place to work but to relax and be comfortable in. You will be spending many hours in your home office so make sure you like the layout, the furniture, and have all the technology you need. Working from home is a nice thing, but you want your home office to also be a place where you can get work done. Some people prefer to have a home office in there home even if they don’t work from home, it’s a good place to sit down and pay bills.

The most important part of your home office is going to be the office furniture that you have. You want to make sure you have a desk, comfortable office chair, file cabinets, and all the computer equipment that you are going to need to be able to get all your work done. Most people tend to have a printer, and a scanner as well. The benefit to having a scanner is there are many fax by e-mail programs, so instead of having to go out and get a fax machine you can just use your computer to send and receive all the faxes that you need. Another important thing that you need for your home office is to make sure you have access to the Internet, and it’s a reliable connection. If you work from home you need to make sure your Internet is up and running at all times. Also, depending on the nature of your home business you may want to have a few different phone lines for your home office.

Home offices are great for any home, even if you don’t work from home. Its still a place you can sit down and pay bills, or even a good place to get away. The great thing about your home office is that you can customize it to have exactly what you need to get work done. You can get great home office ideas online, and custom fit them to your specific needs.

Table Lamps For Your Home

Table Lamps come in many different styles. Picking out the perfect table lamp for your home can be a lot more difficult then people think. Table lamps are often used for general, accent, or task lighting. The most popular types of table lamps are Tiffany Table Lamps, Mica Table Lamps, Wood Lamps, and Wrought Iron Lamps.

Tiffany Table Lamps are known for the shade that it produces. They are mostly made of glass in elegant different colors. Because a lot of Tiffany Table Lamps are hand rolled glass, there is usually small difference in the lamps. Mica Lamps are very elegant in design, And offer a very distinct look. Mica lamps very from color to color and you can get one to match just about any décor in your home. Wood Lamps and Wrought Iron Lamps are very decorative lamps and can usually be a little bit more expensive depending on the material. No mater what style of table lamp you choose, there is defiantly going to be one to match the interior of your home.

Picking out a RC Car or Truck

Remote control cars and trucks are flying off the shelves. Quickly becoming one of the most popular hobbies, you can find all you need at your local hobby store.

If you are brand new to Remote Controll Cars and Trucks, here is a quick overview of your options. First, when you see RTR that means ready to run. In other words, it’s ready to go straight out of the box. This can be a great gift for a newbie hobbyist or just a quick introduction to the hobby itself. The cool thing about RTR sets is that they typically allow for upgrades and they have the “kinks” worked out so you are not likely to have to return to the store for issues. Of course, after all the fun you have you will return to the store for more sets!

The other, much more time consuming option is to build your own set from pieces. This can be a much more rewarding experience as you put the rc car or rc truck together yourself. The time building is what makes this type of hobby fun for a lot of fans.

Now onto the type of trucks themselves:

Offroad Nitro RC Trucks. This might be what you imagine when you think of awesome remote control trucks…the outdoor track, the high jumps, and the fantastic stunts this is it. These are the most durable of RC truck products.

Onroad Nitro Powered RC Cars. These probably go faster than any other related product, but they are also the most fragile. Make sure to only drive these on prepared services like concrete or a soft track.

Nitro Buggies. These combine the power of RC Cars and the durability of the RC Trucks. These are powerful little guys that get the job done!

As mentioned there are all sorts of upgrades you can add to your Remote Control car or Remote Control truck. There are also a ton of options of how to use them. Depending on their intended use, you might decide to buy both RTR and model kits. For example, if you wanted to build a RC Car or Truck for a competition you probably want to make it from scratch. On the other hand, if you are looking to pay around on the street, or have a kid play with them you might decide RTR is more your speed. Typically it is easier to handle damage if you didn’t build the product yourself. Of course, that’s all relative. Some people just love the building and don’t really care what happens to the RC Car or Truck after it is made.

Any hobby store will have these items. Some stores might have a better selection of models or might specialize in RTR. That’s why it’s so important to shop around. If you find a hobby store that specializes in exactly what you want, chances are the owner has a ton of experience you can use.

If you are brand new to models, RC Cars and Trucks are a very common starting point. Though, they aren’t the only one. Remember, it’s your hobby – do what you want!

Landscape Lighting For Your Home

There are many different types of Landscape Lighting, and many different uses for each. The first main type of landscape lighting is spotlights. Spotlight lighting can be used for a number of different purposes. They can be used to light up a big area of your backyard, or can be used to light up a path or walkway. Spotlight lighting is often low to the ground, and can be camouflaged into the yard.

The next main type of landscape lighting is Path and Area Lights. This type of landscape lighting is much different then spotlight lighting because it is usually bigger and can light a larger area. These lights are usually along side a path in the backyard, a walkway to the house, or can be used to light up an area such as a patio table or out yard bbq. As with all types of landscape lighting these can be purchased to camouflage into your yard.

Solar powered landscape lighting is becoming very popular, and affordable. Solar landscape lighting can be used for just about any purpose, but must be in places where they get at least 5-6 hours of sun each day to keep the yard lit all night. Landscape Lighting can do so many things for your yard to make it look better and with so many different types of lighting available you can create almost any backyard project you can imagine. Landscape lighting ideas and designs can be found online, or in project books. My next article will feature the most modern and unique landscape lighting designs.

Chandelier Ideas

Selecting a lighting chandelier for your home or apartment.  There are many more areas to install a lighting chandelier that you may not have considered.  Have you ever considered installing a lighting chandelier in the backyard or in the bathroom?  In my wildest dreams I wouldn’t have thought of installing a lighting chandelier in the backyard.  Today’s new styling is bringing the indoors to the outdoors.  Outdoor living spaces are ever more popular than ever before.  Creating living spaces in the out of doors is gaining popularity across the country.  What was once was done only in California and Florida is now being introduced across the country, like Colorado, Utah Illinois are using outdoor lighting chandelier.  Places like Texas, Tennessee, New York, Philadelphia and the New England states are using outdoor lighting chandeliers. These outdoor living spaces are catching on all over the United States.  The lighting manufacturers are making beautiful lighting chandeliers approved for installation in wet location areas.  These manufacturers are offering these wet location approved lighting chandeliers in a variety of styles to fit the look of any décor.

The new chandelier lighting trend is to install lighting chandeliers in locations that were not traditionally done in the recent past.  The usual places one would consider to install a lighting chandelier were over the dinning table, kitchen or breakfast table and the entry of tall ceiling homes and that was about it.  Today’s new designers are creating lighting chandeliers that are styled appropriately for non-traditional areas of your home.  You can use a smaller chandelier or mini chandelier or what is sometimes referred to as a chandelette in powder bathrooms or tub areas of a bathroom.  In larger bathrooms you could use a full size lighting chandelier.  Some interior designers are specifying smaller lighting chandeliers to be installed in walk-in closets over the center custom wardrobe islands.  Consider installing a smaller lighting chandelier on either side of the bed, over a nightstands or bedside tables, instead of using table lamps.  Using the chandeliers over bedside tables frees up the nightstands for a cleaner look and gives more space for other items of interest or function.  There’s one or two lighting manufacturers that has a bracket for mini lighting chandeliers that allows them to be mounted from a wall, think of endless locations that these mini chandeliers can be mounted with this feature.  Imagine installing mini chandeliers on either side of the fireplace were traditionally wall sconces were mounted.  With these new wall bracketed mini lighting chandeliers installed they can offers a new fresh look you’re your fireplace.

Recessed lighting is loosing some of its popularity in today’s homes as the only source of light.  Since the introduction of the recessed light in the 50’s, recessed lighting has dominated many areas of the home, as the only source of light for a multitude of reasons.  Mainly because recessed lighting is an efficient, inexpensive, easy, way to illuminate an area, a contractors dream.  Contractor’s love recessed lighting so much they don’t give their customer any other choices of lighting.  They don’t offer lighting chandeliers as a choice for many locations in your home.  In fact I have heard disappointed customers say that their contractor said recessed lighting was the only light they could have in their hallway or the only kind of lights available for their kitchen or living room. This is simply not true.  In homes with taller ceilings several chandeliers repeating down a hallway will give a grace and charm that can’t ever be achieved with recessed lighting fixture.  Interior designers are specifying lighting chandeliers even in laundry rooms.  Have you seen the new washers and dryers today?  It would be shameful to use a unity light from the home center in a laundry room with these new appliances they are too beautiful you need a complimenting lighting chandelier to do them justice.  To warm up a kitchen a couple lighting chandeliers can do the trick.  Don’t get me wrong I’m not for eliminating the recessed light fixture.  I’m in favor of using them in conjunction with each other the recessed light and the decorative lighting chandelier.  For task lighting the recessed light.  For general lighting the decorative lighting chandelier will offer mood, ambience and style to enhance any room, any area through out your home.  For your next home remodel for an up grade to add style and charm consider in the unexpected areas of your home using decorative lighting chandeliers.

Diecast Model Cars

What’s truly unique about diecast model cars is the supreme resale value. Many, many people build these models and sell them to others as collector’s editions. If you want to make money with your hobby, this is a great choice. And, it really isn’t that hard.

When you first start out with diecast model cars, start with something simple. Typically the scale 1/43 is the “collector’s scale” but for your first model, try any size. You will likely treasure this first model anyway and will not want to sell it.

As you search around for diecast model cars, constantly look for bargains. Don’t buy the first thing that fancies you. Consider it but look for a better price elsewhere. Especially if you are considering a future business in selling your models, you obviously want to buy low and sell high. Becoming a part of your hobby store community is a great way to learn where and how to shop for your models.

Even if your long term goal is a business, your short term should always be your pleasure. Pick cars you love. Don’t worry about sticking to one genre. Pick different eras, get different brands. As long as you enjoy building the diecast model you will make it perfect. And when it comes time to sell, your buyer will only be interested in a particular car, not what other cars it shared a shelf with.

Before you do any purchasing however, buy the appropriate guides. There are guides on pricing model cars and model car collector’s guides. Both of these will be beneficial. You want to be smart in your purchasing, building of your set and of course selling at the right price.

And just like with any other hobby, your local hobby store can direct you to group meetings. These can be a great way to find new friends, and possibly some future business! Networking is not just for marketers. Getting the inside information on your local model car network can make all the difference in making your hobby a business.

If you are looking to sell or purchase models make sure to consider online auction sites like eBay. This will connect you to enthusiasts around the country. Also, you might find yourself a fantastic deal. Remember that people can be finicky. What sells low today, might be high later on down the road.

Here’s a recap:
~ Start with a car you genuinely love. Don’t worry about the scale, you can do the “collector’s scale” of 1/43 down the road.
~Remember to seek out bargains. Basic rule of money, buy low and sell high.
~Use your hobby store as a resource for groups, advice and buying supplies.
~ Don’t worry about a “set” – buy each piece because you love it.
~ Purchase guides. No reason to reinvent the wheel.
~ Look for models or kits anywhere.

Start a new hobby that can be a thriving business in no time. Good luck on your journey. And remember, your local hobby store is the prime resource for anybody building or selling model cars. Be sure to serach online for diecast model cars as well, you can find just about any car you want.

Model Railroad Scenery

Model Railroad Scenery for model trains is what give your train set the life and gives it the feel and design that you want. Many people, myself included, think that model railroad scenery is the best/my favorite part of model railroading. Without scenery all you have a train that goes around a track. There is nothing unique about it, and besides getting different trains there is nothing to really customize. Scenery is where you get to be creative. Model Train Scenery is where you can express yourself at make your model train set look how you want too. With so many different model trains scenery sets available, no two sets will be alike. You might have the same train set, but the scenery will defiantly set it apart. There are many different types of scenery for you train sets, but a few types of model railroad scenery can be broken down into the following categories:

Backdrops – This is actually an important part to you scene that many people tend to over look. Easy to install, these printed backdrops add depth and distance by creating a smooth transition between you actual scenery and backdrop. If done correctly you can make you model railroad set come to life, and give it more dimension then just being on the ground.

Complete Scenery Kits – Complete scenery kits usually come designed to look like specific stations, your completely unique ones. They usually come with enough parts to give you train a very nice look – and are often cheaper then buying it piece by piece. The problem is you can’t customize your set as much with these. This is a good thing if you want to start out with a complete kit and then add things to it in the future. You are never limited with model railroad scenery and a complete scenery kit is kind of a jump-start into your completed model railroad scenery.

These are just a few of the literally thousand kinds of model railroad scenery that is available. If you have seen it outside, there’s a good chance that there is a company out there that makes it. Another cool thing about it is there are so many different options for the scenery that is available. For example if you want a building to put next to your track there are tons of options! You can get a plastic building for example. Or you can get a wood building. You can paint the building yourself, or do you want a pre painted building? No matter what kind you want you can have it that’s what’s so cool about model railroad scenery. They also have things such as famous buildings that you can buy and put there to and make your railroad set look like a real place or even a real train station that you have been to. The possibilities are endless, but there is sure to be something for everyone when it comes to model railroad scenery. That’s what makes it one of the best parts about the hobby of model railroading.

Mini Pendant Lighting

Most people don’t realize this but mini pendant lights are much different then there big brother standard pendant lighting. Mini Pendant Lighting is usually done for a more modern look. They don’t provide as much light coming from them as regular lighting, and the trend is to buy 3 or 4 of them and put them in a row. Mini Pendant lights are very beautiful and are often used where very little lighting is needed, but they are used to show of the beauty and accent the room. Most will create a soft glow, and can be hung just about anywhere.

You will usually see them over bars, hanging in a row. Because they come in different styles in the same family of lighting you can choose to buy 3 or 4 of the same light, with a slightly different finish to give and ultra modern look to a bar. Another use for mini pendant lighting is to hang them in groups over a kitchen island in a kitchen. A good size island can take a few to light up, but the look can be completely customized with multiple pendants.

The two main types of mini pendants are either stem or cable. The stem lights are hung from the ceiling with a solid stem connecting them, usually some sort of bar. The fixed stem holds the light in place, and will not move.  Unlike the fixed stem, chain or cord models are hung from the ceiling with a cord, or a chain. These models usually offer more design choices because the chain or cord can be tied in with the other types of finishes in the room. No matter what type you chose, mini pendants offer many choices for any type look you are going for.

Roof Repairs

Your roof most importantly serves as the structural support of your home. The roof protects your house from the elements, and comes in many different styles to choose from. The cost of a new roof varies greatly depending on the materials used. Depending where you live can have an important factor in choosing the kind of roof you select. Roofing contractors will be able to give you quotes based on location. Based on your budget and needs we can help you select a perfect roof for your home. Roof repair is also an important, most roof problems aren’t seen until they are to late to fix. There are also a number of common problems that can go wrong with your roof, and here is a list of the most common roof problems.

The first problem with any roof, and it doesn’t matter what type of roof it is – is leaking. Any roof can leak. Roof leaks are a problem, no matter how small they may seem. Even the smallest of roof leaks often lead to a larger problem, and especially if you live in an area with lost of rain your going to have a big problem. A roof like is a sign that there is a problem with the roof and if not fixed right away it can turn into a huge disaster. With a roof leak of any size you can examine the area yourself and see if it may just be a loose shingle. If there is more then one area compromised it’s going to be best to call a professional.

A good way to prevent any of these problems with your roof is routine maintenance on the roof. You don’t have to know a lot about roofs to be able to tell if there is a problem. Anytime there is a build up of water on the roof you know there is a problem with it not draining correctly. Also things like loose shingles, or pitch pockets that haven’t been filled these should be pretty obvious signs that are you going to have a problem. Finding minor problems like these before they explode is a good way to not have a huge and expensive disaster, not to mention a headache.

No matter what you think may be wrong with your roof, keep in mind having an expert out every year or so is a very good idea. A simple roof inspection is fairly cheep and can defiantly save you money in the long run. A certified roof inspector can find problems that you would have no idea exist, and often they can find problems and quick fixes on your roof that will make it worth his visit. The roof over your head is the only protection you have from the elements, and you want to make sure that its in good shape and can do its job. This is especially important in areas where its very cold, and ice on the roof can cause a strain on the structure of it.

Picking Out A RC Boats

Even though RC Boats are not traditionally as popular as cars, trucks and planes they have a very devote following. And just like all remote controlled products, there is a lot to take in before jumping into RC boats.

First, let’s look at the variety of shapes. This is the size and shape of the hull specifically. That shape defines the boat and its overall performance in the water.

Here are the five shapes that Remote Control Boats come in:

Deep V’s – Historically the most popular of RC boats, the Deep V’s capture top speed time and again. So named because of the V shape hull, this shape allows the boat to absorb an exorbitant amount of impact from big waves in choppy waters. When you are driving this type of boat, the nose of the hull is well out of the water.

Catamarans – These are the two sponsons rc boats you see with off-shore race boats. They have incredible stability because of the two separate point of contact with the water. However, this design does increase drag and cannot hit top speeds.

Hydroplanes – Just as the name suggests, hydroplanes skim across the water. They go so quickly, and are so technical in nature they are often referred to as the “Formula One of RC Boating.”

Sailboats – Just like their real world counterparts, sailboats are not pushed by an engine. Remote Control sailboats are all about the direction and length of the sail, a highly advanced skill. RC Sailboats are by far the slowest and most relaxing boat out there.

Mini’s – A great introduction to the world of RC boating. You can use these guys in smaller areas, maybe even a pool. Most mini’s are available as RTR (ready to race) so they require virtually no preparation to get them out in the water.

You probably already have an idea of the shape rc boat you are going to use. What about how it is powered? Let’s look at the different fuel choices:

Gasoline powered – Similar to what you would use with a weed whacker, RC boats can run off a gasoline and oil mixture. This can be convenient, inexpensive and make a very authentic atmosphere. Remember that gasoline powered boats will have a very realistic sound as the engine is roared.

Electric powered – Sometimes you are going to want to put your boat somewhere with noise ordinances. In this instance, gasoline powered boats are not a good option. In order to have the same experience but without all the noise, many people prefer electric powered boats. Also, consider the joy of simply plugging in your boat overnight and enjoying it the next day.

Nitro Powered – This can be found at your local hobby store. This will cost a bit more, but will be worth it since you won’t have to mix gas and oil together yourself. It’s also just an all around safer option.

These are just two major components to buying RC boats. Once you find a combination you love, you will enjoy all the different models that come with those specs.

Bathroom Lighting Ideas

When it comes to lighting for your home bathroom lighting is usually one of the last things that people think about. Most people tend to even “forget” about it, and would rather spend more of their lighting budget on things in more common areas of the home. When it finally comes time for the bathroom lighting, a single fixture is sometimes installed and that doesn’t come anywhere close to lighting up the bathroom. Keep in mind the bathroom is where you start every single day, making it comfortable can help give you that extra lift to start a long day.

To make things simple there are two main types of lighting for your bathroom, task and general. General lighting in the bathroom doesn’t usually cause to many problems, as long as you can turn the light switch on and the room isn’t still dark your on you way to being ok. Task lighting on the other hand is where people tend to fall behind.

The biggest problem people have with task lighting and most important problem in my opinion is that there is not enough light in the one place you need it – the mirror. There are very few things that frustrated me as much as a bathroom with inadequate lighting at the mirror. So how do you light up the mirror? Well, the worst thing that you can do is put recessed ceiling fixtures directly over the mirror. Doing so will cast shadows on the face, and making things much more difficult. The best lighting for mirrors is vertical fixtures mounted on either side of the mirror; some bathroom mirrors now will include lighting in them. This is best for casting an even light across the face and not giving you dull shadows to look at well you are trying to shave, or any part of your daily grooming.

Bathroom Lighting is a very important part of any home, so please make sure to consider it when redoing the lighting or remodeling your home. You start your day there, and nothing worse then starting off in the wrong light. Bathroom Lighting Fixtures are also very affordable.

Building a Home Theater

A home theater is a great addition to any house. Your home theater could be as simple a living room with a nice couch and a television, or a room with projection style TV screens and stadium seating. Your home theater can be as big an as exciting as you want, and we have all the tips to help you save money and build a home theater in your house for less! Also tips to selecting a new TV, we can help you figure out what’s better a LCD or a Plasma TV for your home.

The main goals during your home theater’s construction phase are noise isolation and build quality. If you are going to be watching loud movies in your home theater, you don’t want the sound to echo out into to rest of the house. Also sound the room will sound much better if all the sound stays into the room. Build quality refers to the types of materials you use during construction and how you use them. All materials will affect how the room sounds. Noise isolation refers to how much outside noise reaches into your room and how much of your room’s noise reaches the outside world. This is one of the most important things to consider. Outside noise coming into your home theater is just as bad as inside noise going out.

Designing your home theater can be a very expensive project, so its best to make sure you know everything you want to do before you get started. Keep in mind when planning a budget that once you start building and construction, no matter how well the budget is planned there are always things and always will go wrong with any project. Keep in mind a good idea when building your home theater in your house is to start out small, and add things along the way so it’s not such a big expense all at once.

Plastic Model Kits

Building plastic model kits is a fascinating pastime. Any modeler will tell you that what he builds is absolutely not a toy. The vast majority of models are from history. The accuracy of models is typically what is measured during contests. There are a wide variety of genres that use models from military to sci-fi, from cars to space.

Just like any other hobby, there are people at all different levels of experience. However, the type of person that enjoys model building will likely stick with it for years to come. The time, precision and overall dedication to make one model is just part of the puzzle. There is also the relatively high cost of the hobby. Not necessarily the models themselves, but the tools required to do a quality model.

Here is a list of tools that most modelers have in their tool box for their hobby:
Brush (some modelers use airbrushes for a smooth effect)
Tweezer
Plastic side cutter
Pliers
Craft knife (think Xacto)
Mini-Drill
Sandpaper
Putty

Obviously some plastic model kits require different tools, but all models require these basics. Every time you get a model there will be some flash to deal with. Flash is a bit of excess material that needs to be cut off and smoothed out. Model pieces are typically made out of polystyrene plastics melted into molds. Somewhere along the line, every modeler will find excess plastic from the mold.

Another time that excess material needs to be taken care of is with waterslide decals. These special decals are made specifically for models as they are much more flat than regular stickers. They also have a different adhesive backing.

The size of models obviously varies with genre. Typically each genre has a common scale, but not always. For example, most battleships are made to a 1/350 or 1/700 scale. When someone builds a battleship to 1/350 scale it is still a few feet long. Other common scales would be 1/48 and 1/32 for aircrafts or cars, 1/35 or 1/72 for tanks, and 1/16 or 1/6 for figures.

Each modeler has complete control over his model no matter what is in the box. Though traditionally modelers work toward historical accuracy, some items are completely up to them. For example, whether or not to have people on your model is totally up to the modeler. In fact, models that include people tend to have them in pieces. That way a modeler can even decide the tiny person’s hand gestures. It really is quite remarkable!

Some plastic model kits can take on many of the characteristics of the life size item. For example, many car models require sanding, painting, etc. All the things you would need to build a real life car are required when making a model.

Next time you visit your local hobby shop, or shope online, ask about different brands for plastic model kits. Some have been around for ages, some just in the last ten years or so. The truth is that models have drastically upgraded in the last 15 years. Lots of modelers have group meetings or showings, get involved and ask around about what other brands people are using.

And like most things that take time, dedication and bit of money, your finished product will be around a long time. Many people even pass plastic model kits down to future generations. Start a tradition of modeling; it will be an amazing gift for ages to come.

HO Scale Model Trains

Ho Scale Model Trains is by far the most popular scale of model trains. It is most popular all over the world, not just in the United States. HO Scale is also known as “H0 Scale” in other parts of the world.  The scale ratio is 1/87th. The minimum track circle needs to be 69” across. A typical boxcar for this scale is 6” long and 1 ½” tall. This is the best choice for an all around set if you have the room

Why is HO Scale the most popular? Its probably because it is large enough to have enough detail in the locomotives to impress almost anyone, almost more detail then in small scale model train sets. It can also be very safe for kids, with less risk that they are going to swallow the small parts. HO Scale tends to give you more model train for your dollar too, because its more popular and they are produced a lot more then N and Z scale trains, and also less expensive then S, O, and G Scale because of the smaller amount of material.

There are many manufactures of HO Scale Model Trains, but the most popular today are:

Athearn

Athearn Genesis

Atlas

Bachmann

Bowser

Brawa

Broadway Limited

CMX

Con-Cor

Custom Finishing

Durango Press

Grandt Line Produc

Intermountain Rail

Kato

Keystone Locomotiv

Lifelike

M R C

MDC Roundhouse

Model Power

Stewart Hobbies

Walthers

Dishwashers Can Save You Money

Most modern homes come with a built-in dishwasher. If you are looking to upgrade yours, here I have put together a list of information that you may need to help you with your decision. Dishwashers are now available in a wide range of finishes and styles, and can be customized to fit the look and feel of your kitchen. There is also portable dishwashers that can be a great option for some. Also adding a new dishwasher to your home is very simple, and can usually be done without the need for a contractor.

Think washing dishes by hand saves you time and money? Think again. Using an efficient dishwasher you can actually use less water then washing dishes by hand. Old dishwashers can also waste up to 30% more electricity then new energy efficient dishwashing machines.

Portable dishwashers are cheaper, and lot more compact then a standard version. They will do the trick, but they don’t have as much cleaning power as the stand-alone units. They are good if you only have 1 or 2 people in a home, or apartment, but will lack the cleaning power and space if you have a full family home.

What type of dishwasher should I buy? After many consumer reviews on dishwashers the leading manufactures are: Bosh Dishwashers, Frigidaire, Fisher & Paykel, GE, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Maytage, and Whirlpool. Also remember when choosing a new consider ENERGY STAR certified dishwashers, guaranteed to save you money. Saving money, saving time, and saving energy makes getting a new dishwasher a great choice.

O Scale Model Trains

O Scale Model Trains are a very popular set of scale model trains. O Scale is best known by the brand Lionel Trains. The scale ratio is 1/48th. The minimum track circle needs to be 31” across. A typical boxcar for this scale is 9” long and 3” tall. This is the best choice for an all around set if you have the room. These are the most popular train sets for around the Christmas Tree.

Lionel Trains come in two gauges,O and O-27. Its important to know that gauge is the width of the track, and is different from the SCALE. Only trains that fit the track will run on (with a few exceptions). Most Lionel trains run on two similar, related track gauges: O gauge and O-27 gauge. The difference between the scales is the curves of the track. Curves in O-27 gauge are shorter or tighter than in O gauge. That means that some of the very longest O gauge cars and locomotives are too long to turn the tight corners of O-27 gauge layout. All O-27 gauge cars and locomotives will work on O gauge track. Lionel O gauge and O-27 gauge trains are the most popular type of O Scale Model Trains. It is important to note when shopping for a train or train set, be sure to choose products that are designed to work together.

Lionel Trains have been popular for a very long time now, so O Scale is a great set to choose if you want to collect the sets, and not necessarily play with them. Lionel trains that are still in the box tend to go for a good amount of money. There are serious collectors who will pay top dollar for an original Lionel trains set that is still in the box. If you plan on just collecting the trains, Lionel Trains O Scale may be just what you want. Aside from the fact that they are collector’s items, O Scale Model Trains are a very fun set to play with. They are very detailed trains, and they are just the right size to play with your home or basement. They are large enough to show detail, but not to big for actual use. The O Scale model trains also are fine for some children because they are not as tiny as other scales of Trains.

Even Though Lionel Trains is the biggest name in O Scale Model Trains, there are a couple of manufactures that make great O Scale Model trains as well. A Few of the other big players in the O Scale Model Train game are: Atlas, Bachmann, and M T H all make great locomotives. Another great part about this scale is that because it was made so popular by Lionel Trains, there is a great number of companies that make parts for the set, and tracks. You can easily get just about any kind of O Scale model train track that you need, and they are very affordable due to the popularity of the scale. The same goes for the model train scenery; there is a huge number of companies that make it for the O Scale Train.

G Scale Model Trains

G Scale model trains is a very popular scale of model train sets. There are many great things that you can do with G Scale train sets that you can’t do with any other kind of train set. Before we begin lets go into the basics with the G Scale train set. G Scale Model Trains are the largest scale Toy Train Set. The scale ratio is 1/23rd. The minimum track circle needs to be 51” across. A typical boxcar for this scale is 16” long and 6” tall. They can be used indoor or outside in a garden railway. G Scale train sets are often called “Garden Scale” because its about the only set of model trains that can run outside, because its big enough and durable enough to withstand the elements.

What can you do with a G Scale model train set? The first option people love to do is put this set out into there Garden. The reason that this set is so good for outdoor use, such as in a garden is its big enough to be seen through plants and flowers. The set creates a nice look and feel for any outdoor set. G Scale model train sets are also built to withstand the elements, so the tracks wouldn’t rust and you don’t have to worry about maintenance on these outdoor train sets. There is no other scale of model train set other then G Scale train set that can operate outside without any maintenance.

Another popular place for people to put G Scale train sets is into there home. They are bigger then most other sets, so you want to make sure you have enough room for the train set to function. A popular place people will put them is into a home bar. If you have a bar in your home you can run the train set behind it, and it will give you bar a very unique look. Again there is no maintenance required with this model train set so all you have to do is lay the track and turn it on, and it will be going in no time. This is a great addition to any room that you want to make a little bit more unique. Another great area people will place these sets is if they have a large basement. If you have a basement and a G Scale model train set, you can create a wonderfull set complete with buildings and back drops. G Scale model trains are a great set for anyone as well, because they are big enough that even children don’t have to worry about choking on the parts.

Even the scenery for this set is big enough you don’t need to worry about your kids playing with the set even if you are not watching them Even if model train isnt your thing, you can see that you still can have fun with a G Scale Model Trains set. Think of it more as a nice decorative piece for your home then “a toy”. People will be amazed when they see the train running though your house, and even the most upscale homes can add it as a nice accessory to the room.

Model Railroad Scenery Ideas

Outdoor Lighting Ideas

From twinkling candles glimpsed through a window to trees and shrubs decked in brightly colored strands, outdoor lighting can be the warmest welcome for your guests during the holidays. And if you’ve been thinking about enhancing the outdoor lighting above and around your front porch or door, the holidays are a great time to put that thought into action.  People spend more time than ever before in the outdoor spaces of their homes. The front and back entry areas have become living spaces frequented by friends and family.  This has led to consumers wanting to decorate and light these areas with the same importance as the inside of their home.  Attractive outdoor lighting not only enhances your enjoyment of your home, it adds curb appeal and value, and can welcome guests with a feeling of warmth and security all year round. Good outdoor lighting is especially important during the holidays, when more guests will be coming to your door, the experts agree.

Homeowners thinking about upgrading their outdoor lighting should keep some basics in mind, including scale, style, visibility and planning.  Frequently, you see homes with outdoor lighting lanterns that aren’t large enough for the home or the area it’s illuminating.  When choosing outdoor lighting lanterns to hang above your door, consider viewing your home’s entry from the curb or coming up the driveway as a guest would.  A good rule of thumb for choosing a right-sized outdoor lighting lantern is to pick one that is at least a third the size of the door, says outdoor lighting experts.  That means if your door is 7 feet high, your lantern should be 27 to 30 inches long, outdoor lighting experts say if you decide to go with a outdoor lighting lantern on either side of the door, then each should be about 25 percent of the door’s height.  Appropriately sized outdoor lighting lanterns not only provide ample outdoor lighting illumination for the area you’re trying to light, they also impart elegance to a facade, outdoor lighting experts all agree.  They really are a show of confidence.

The style of the outdoor lighting is also important, the outdoor lighting experts agree. The style of your outdoor lighting should match both the design of your home’s exterior and the lighting design inside the house.

Outdoor lighting should be selected to accentuate the architecture, not detract from the beauty of the structure, says outdoor lighting experts.  What’s more, they go on to say, it’s important the entryway outdoor lighting has a relation with driveway outdoor lighting, landscape lighting, deck lighting and the rest of the lighting on your home. You want to avoid the “flea market” approach where all the pieces are different.  If your home is colonial, Victorian, traditional, craftsman or contemporary, be sure to look for outdoor lighting that pairs well with the architectural style.  For example, if the exterior color palette is warm, then brown or bronze light fixtures may be more appropriate, outdoor lighting experts point out.

Don’t be afraid to incorporate some trends into your outdoor lighting design.  Some hot outdoor lighting trends include the addition of crystals to different style fixtures, and for upscale homes natural gas lanterns in copper or brass.  Layering several types of outdoor lighting at an entry is also popular.  For example, if your door has an overhang, you may place recessed outdoor lighting in the overhang, paired with decorative outdoor lighting lanterns on either side of the door and outdoor lighting path lighting leading up to the door.  There’s more variety than ever in outdoor lighting, most of the outdoor lighting experts are in agreement.  Pluralism is the trend.

Homeowners looking to temporarily enhance their outdoor lighting for the holidays have a host of options as well. Outdoor lighting designers like the idea of putting outdoor lighting on a dimmer to create a warm, comforting mood.  Outdoor lighting designers recommend adding low-voltage landscape lighting, which is easy to install and can be moved or added on to in the future.   Attractive outdoor lighting can be a great way to welcome your guests at the holidays, the outdoor lighting designers and experts all agree.  A warm glow by your front door indicates your personality, and the personality of your home.

Landscape Lighting

The real estate market may be in a slump, but not all industries having to do with the home are in trouble. Landscape lighting companies that specialize in remodeling and renovation, particularly in the area of outdoor living, are doing extremely well right now.  People don’t want to lose money on their biggest investment so instead of moving they’re improving their homes. Now that warmer weather has arrived, people are adding decks, patios, gazebos and outdoor kitchens to their homes, and they aren’t just planning to use them in the daytime.

The trend towards expanding outdoor living space has been growing for some time now.  In past years, the goal was focused on lighting the space and showing off the garden and landscaping.  Now we’re concentrating a lot more effort on finding innovative ways to light outdoor spaces so they can be used at night, much like they’re used during the day.

Backyard decks no longer just have a small light near the door. Landscape Lighting designers are now installing landscape lighting down lights in trees and attaching them to chimneys to shine landscape lighting light down on the space.  These landscape lighting designers also are putting in a lot of landscape lighting step lights to make the transition from the upper to lower level easier.   People no longer have to feel like they’re under a spotlight when they sit outside under the stars.  If there’s a tree nearby, we can shine landscape lighting light down from it. Attaching fixtures to a chimney is also a nice way to get light from above that feels like moonlight.

And when it comes to lighting outdoor kitchens, innovation is key. “We do a lot of task lighting with landscape lighting in the outdoor kitchen,” say the landscape lighting designers. “We’ll utilize the arbors to hang landscape lighting task lighting over the sink, the grill and the table, for example, and put them on dimmers so when the light isn’t needed, it can be turned down for mood.”

Landscape lighting designers credit the recent innovations offered by various landscape lighting manufacturers for making those projects possible. “Technology sure has come a long way in a short amount of time,” says one landscape lighting designer interviewed.  Other landscape lighting designers agree “Manufacturers realize there’s a growing market for outdoor fixtures and they have responded by stepping up to the challenge to develop chandeliers, table lamps and sconces that are rated for wet conditions so they can be safely installed outdoors.  Safety isn’t the only factor being considered by landscape lighting manufacturers.  So is operating cost.  Not so long ago, the U.S. government mandated that the lighting industry find ways to cut energy consumption of their products.  Lighting manufacturers responded coming out with a line of landscape lighting outdoor fixtures that use highly efficient L.E.D. bulbs that require one-third the energy of incandescent.

“When people realize they can get the same light output, a nice comfortable color and reduce energy use by 75 percent, they are more than willing to make the change,” says the landscape lighting designers.  There have been innovations in the area of landscape lighting for curb appeal purposes as well.  Landscape lighting is about safety, security and aesthetics.  As far as the latter goes, the key to success is being subtle.  Less is always more.  All the landscape lighting designers and installers agree, lighting the outdoors is a trend that’s here to stay, because people are investing in their homes more and more.

RC Airplanes

Another popular hobby store item is remote control model airplanes. A longtime favorite, let’s go over some of the basics of RC airplanes.

First, what makes the biggest difference in control is the placement of wings. As you can imagine, the higher the wings, the easier it is to fly. As you become more experienced you can start flying airplanes that have the weight above the wings for special tricks. Here is a rundown of the weight / wing relationships:

Low Wing. This is exactly what it sounds like, the wings are low and attached under the fuselage. This is the type of plan best suited for experienced pilots. The reason for this is the sensitivity needed to pull off stunts with low wing rc planes. Once you have the skill level to fly these rc airplanes though, you can do stunts that are not possible with other plans. Think WWII or aerobatic models.

Mid Wing. This is the symmetrical looking plane. Wings are placed directly in the middle of the plan. This is a very common design for those who are between novice and experienced.

High Wing or Bi-Wing. These are at the top of the plane, or in the case of the bi-wing, there are two wings on both sides. This is the easiest planes for beginners. It provides a very stable flight.

Another thing to consider is the speed or space it takes to fly a remote control plane. For beginners, look for sets that say “slow flyer” or “park flyer” as this tells you the speed and space it will take to fly the plane. You can use many Slow Flyers inside a home. The only real difference between a slow flyer and a park flyer is that park flyers tend to have more speed. Both of these types are breakable. Whether you are flying in your home or at the park avoid obstacles. Also, these types of plans require no or little wind. They tend to be very light and so in a good wind you will lose control (and possibly sight) of your plane. Neither of which is good!

Lastly, propeller safety is a real issue with RC airplanes. Almost any type of plane you fly has the potential to harm you or someone else. Obviously the potential danger is dependent on the type of material or the power behind a propeller. Use common sense to keep yourself and others out of harm’s way. An easy way to do this would be paint the edges of the propellers a very obvious color like black or red. This will help you see the edges of the propellers when they are in motion and where the “safety zone” is for your fingers.

This was just a basic recap of some parts of RC airplanes. Get to your local hobby store and talk somebody’s ear off. Better yet, just lurk the RC airplane aisle and keep your ears open for great tips!

Affordable Kitchen Lighting

Illuminating the Future of Kitchen Lighting: Energy Efficiency It doesn’t matter if you live in a home with a modern kitchen that has all the fancy upgrades, or one that just has a single overhead light in the center of the room. If you’re not using the latest generation of energy-efficient bulbs, it’s time for a kitchen lighting upgrade. Kitchen lighting has made great strides in the past couple of years, not just from a kitchen lighting design standpoint, but also with regards to kitchen lighting energy efficiency. So upgrades are definitely worth looking into. Kitchen lighting manufacturers are spending a considerable amount of time, and dedicating a lot of resources to developing kitchen lighting fixtures capable of using more energy-efficient light sources than the standard incandescent light. It’s no coincidence that this trend is growing in popularity at a time when energy costs are on the rise. As recently as two years ago, the only kitchen lighting fixtures available for lighting the kitchen that used the most energy-efficient light sources available today being fluorescents and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) plainly, were not aesthetically pleasing. In today’s marketplace, however, decorative energy-efficient kitchen lighting fixtures are available in every product category, whether you’re looking for something traditional, modern or artsy. Few of the kitchen lighting manufacturers know today’s consumers want to capitalize on the fact that compact fluorescent bulbs are approximately three to four times more efficient than incandescent bulbs, and LEDs can be three to 10 times more efficient, so they’ve dedicated a lot of resources to developing new fixtures that utilize these technologies. Several kitchen lighting manufacturers will be introducing LED under-cabinet unit in the fall that requires just eight watts of energy to provide the same illumination as an 80-watt halogen light source. The new LED kitchen down light will be 40 percent more energy efficient than a kitchen compact fluorescent and 75 percent more energy efficient than a kitchen incandescent.” Because of the energy efficiency and the increasing popularity if the LED kitchen lighting fixtures more and more kitchen lighting manufacturers of residential kitchen lighting fixtures are making plans to release several models of kitchen lighting fixtures that use LEDs early next year. Many have available now kitchen lighting LED pendants that are beautiful with art glass to match or co-ordinate with kitchen granite counter tops. But energy-saving products are nothing new for most kitchen lighting manufacturers. They’ve been offering kitchen lighting fixtures that take halogen IRC bulbs, capable of improving kitchen lighting energy efficiency by 50 percent, for the last five years. Infra Red Coating (IRC) bulbs are designed in such a way that the heat they generate can be recycled and turned into light. Some other kitchen lighting manufacturers that haven’t already are in the meantime concentrated their efforts on developing decorative kitchen lighting fixtures that take compact fluorescents. They have offerings in every category for decorative kitchen lighting fixtures that really enhance what you get out of a compact fluorescent. No matter which of the new technologies you choose to go with, when shopping for energy-efficient kitchen lighting fixtures, it is important to look for kitchen lighting with the Energy Star label. In order to qualify for the Energy Star designation, the kitchen lighting fixture must meet specific performance criteria for kitchen lighting energy-efficient performance set by the U.S. Department of Energy. As for concerns people may have about the quality of light given off by kitchen lighting compact fluorescents and kitchen lighting LEDs, experts say, “while in the past color rendering may have been a concern, it is no longer a problem. Consumers can rest assured the quality closely matches that of the incandescent light one is use to in their current incandescent kitchen lighting.” Today’s kitchen lighting advancements are quite impressive, but what does the future hold for kitchen lighting? Kitchen lighting experts expects the lighting industry as a whole to work hard at getting more products on the shelves that use the most energy-efficient technology developed to date – LEDs. Right now LEDs are still kind of expensive, but once they become more readily available, the cost will come down significantly.

Ceiling Fans Can Save You Money

As gas and energy prices are rising again, that means Americans must tighten up their belts even further.  In the winter you don’t need to dread the drop in the temps, ceilings fans can help you adjust your thermostats to save you dollars.  You don’t need to dread hot summer temps and high air conditioning bills either when you have ceiling fans, your AC’s best friend!

If you already have ceiling fans in place, check to see whether they are Energy Star qualified. Ceiling fan/light combinations that have earned Energy Star accreditation are about 50 percent more efficient than non-conforming units.  The difference lies in improved motors and blade designs. A model with an Energy Star light kit included provides even greater energy savings, and the bulbs don’t need to be changed as often.

Consumer demand for more energy-efficient ceiling fans and lighting products has driven the ceiling fan industry to integrate new ceiling fan lighting, ceiling fan blade and ceiling fan motor technologies that save operating costs.  New products integrating the latest technologies are up to 75 percent more efficient than previous ceiling fan models.

Put your ceiling fans on when you are in the room during the day and when sleeping and turn your ceiling fans off when you leave.  Ceiling fans cool people, not air.  Using ceiling fans wisely while turning down the AC can save a lot of money visa a versa in the winter for your heater.  Ceiling fans do such an efficient job of circulating air, they probably should be everywhere in your home.  Any type of room can benefit, bedrooms, family rooms, and exterior living spaces are the most common applications, but we are seeing them used more in larger bathrooms, walk-in closets, home offices and garages.

Size Matters, consumers are installing ceiling fans throughout their homes, for example, fans with blade spans of 54, 60, and 72 inches are increasingly popular for living rooms and great rooms, while those with 24-inch spans are being installed in hallways and walk-in closets.  How do you estimate the best size of ceiling fans for your needs?  A good rule of thumb is a 36- to 52-inch diameter blade sweep for rooms measuring 200 square feet or less, are recommended by the ceiling fan experts, For rooms 200 to 400 square feet, we recommend ceiling fans have a diameter of 52 inches or greater; if the space is more than 400 square feet, two or more ceiling fans will be needed.

The number of blades makes some but little difference in airflow, however, whether to choose a four-, five-, or six-blade version is really a matter of aesthetics.  You hear a lot about ceiling fans blade pitch, diameter and motor size. These are factors that will affect airflow, the greater the pitch of the blades on your ceiling fans the greater the airflow.

It’s important not to underestimate your ceiling fans.  The most common size of ceiling fans sold in the U.S. is a 52-inch diameter.  This size ceiling fans provides excellent results in rooms up to 150 square feet, but can also be appropriate for smaller rooms since the 52” size ceiling fans can be adjusted with multiple speeds and the direction of the blades can be reversed, unlike some of the other smaller blade span ceiling fans.  “It’s better to choose a slightly larger fan for a room than to choose a diameter that might prove to be too small to adequately provide air movement.

Many ceiling fans now come with integrated lighting or light kits, these all in one ceiling fans, offer a coordinating light kit available as an option.  These lights do not offer enough illumination on their own, but they are useful in a room that already has some form of ambient lighting.  Ceiling fans with lights should be considered as accent and mood lighting.

Should a Ceiling Fan Blend In or Stand Out?

The next step to consider is whether you’d like your ceiling fans to serve as a focal point or be more understated.   The question is should your ceiling fans blend in or stand out?  Is the room contemporary, traditional, tropical or transitional? Ceiling fans can serve as a design feature.  The primary trend in ceiling fan design has been for styles that create aesthetic statements as bold as a chandelier.  This follows the overall trend in residential design for more varied and more sophisticated concepts.  Today a consumer can find a ceiling fan that matches any interior design.

In the summer, ceiling fans offer a comfortable alternative and accompaniment to air conditioning, but in the winter employing the reversible blade option provides a means of circulating the hotter air that rises to the ceiling. This helps save on heating bills when the weather gets cold.  Ceiling fans do help in the winter months too.

Model Railroading

Model railroading is a hobby that isn’t just for kids anymore; it can be enjoyed by just about anyone. There are many different types of model railroads and a kind to fit any need. The first thing you need do when you want a model rail road is decide what scale you want. Here is a quick run down of the scales: N Scale Model Trains are the smallest size of all the train sets. Ho Scale Model Trains is by far the most popular The scale ratio is 1/87th. The minimum track circle needs to be 69” across. A typical box car for this scale is 6” long and 1 ½” tall. O Scale Model Trains is best known the Electric Toy Train brand Lionel Trains This is the best choice for an all around set if you have the room. G Scale Model Trains are the largest scale Toy Train Set. Its often called “Garden Scale” because people can use them outside in there garden, or in there backyard. Now that you know the basic types of model trains, this is where it gets fun. Model railroad scenery and the track design for your set. This is where you get to customize your set, and make it perfect for you.

Scenery for model trains is what give your train set the life and give it the feel and design that you want. There are many different types of scenery for you train sets, but a few types of model railroad scenery can be broken down into the following categories:

Backdrops – Easy to install, these printed backdrops add depth and distance by creating a smooth transition between you actual scenery and backdrop

Complete Scenery Kits – Complete scenery kits usually come designed to look like specific stations, your completely unique ones. They usually come with enough parts to give you train a very nice look – and are often cheaper then buying it piece by piece. The problem is you cant customize your set as much with these.

There are also Foliage, Grass Mats, Covers, Plastic Kits, Rock Molds, and many other choices. The nice thing about model railroading is no matter what you want your railroad scene to look like, there is a good chance that there is a company who makes it, or you can find it somewhere. Scenery can either be purchased by scale, or by manufacturer. You can use any scale scenery for your train, it doesn’t have to be scale specific just as long as it will sit by the side. The track design for your model rail road is another area where you can go completely wild.

You need to buy pieces for your track that are the same as the scale, or else they will not work. A HO Scale track will not work for a G Scale Model Train because they are different sizes. Track pieces come in just about every style that you could ever want, and you can make the tracks go on forever as long as you have enough power going to them and they are always connected. Now that you know ways that you can customise your model train, get started with a set and the possibilities will never end, and you can see why model railroading will be fun for anyone.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting can provide all many different types of lighting for your home. The two main types would be task and general lighting. Pendant lighting is most commonly hung from the ceiling and have many different purposes. Many people tend to hang pendant lighting over kitchen tables, pool tables, or other types of work areas. The main advantage over table lamps is that they free up work areas, and still provide adequate lighting for you.

When purchasing your pendant lighting a few questions are going to come to mind, and this article is designed to help you figure out exactly the type that you want, and the best type for the purpose you intend to use it for. You want to make sure with any lighting that you decide to buy that its going to provide enough illumination for the purpose its serving. Keep in mind that with any lighting you can direct the light with a light shade, or a globe.

Pendant lighting should be hung about 32” to 40” above the kitchen table for nice lighting for a meal. If you are going to be using it as a reading light instead of a table light, you may want to lower the hang height for more direct lighting. Attaching a dimmer control is going to be ideal for a reading light, because the light directed straight down could become very bright, and now you have the flexibility to use the same light for many different tasks.

Pendant Lighting comes in all sizes and price ranges. The best bet you are going to have is to first figure out the main task you want to use the lighting for, and then you can narrow it down to the style and price of the fixture. As always, shop around for the piece that’s going to look perfect in your home, there’s a style and finish out there for you.

Selecting A Chandelier For Your Home or Apartment

Wall Scones Can Make Any Room Look Bigger

Add a wall sconce, expand your space, in this economy, no one can afford to knock down walls or put an addition on their homes. However, for considerably less money, any room can appear larger and look better with one or two strategically placed wall sconces.”As consumers move from buying new houses to remodeling their existing homes, wall sconces can be an attractive answer to consumers’ lighting needs,” lighting designers are in agreement about lighting with wall sconces.  Wall sconces are lighting fixtures that are mounted to a wall and provide subtle illumination and a warm ambiance. “Wall Sconces bring human scale to a room and finish the space,” say lighting professionals.  When many people think of this type of lighting, the first image that may come to mind is a hotel hallway, yet wall sconces are gaining popularity in sophisticated residences all over the country.  Lighting designers believe the young admirers of wall sconces are drawn to styles inspired by their favorite luxury resorts, hotels and restaurants.  They want the wall sconces they’ve seen in Vegas, but scaled down wall sconces a residential size; the styles run the gamut from ornate, splashy looks to cleaner lines with a contemporary feel.An upstairs hallway is an excellent application for wall sconces. In fact, ADA (American Disability Act) -compliant models of wall sconces, which are required for commercial installations, are a great choice for homes because these wall sconces do not extend out from the wall very much. They create a nice, repetitive pattern down a hallway.  Lighting designers and professionals recommend putting the wall sconces on a dimmer control where one can use a lower light level to create ambiance, and placing wall sconces every eight feet for balanced illumination.

Homeowners are discovering how useful and beautiful wall sconces can be in almost any room setting.  Another unique quality wall sconces bring is their ability to expand the look of a space.  Instead of dark corners, which occur when you only have a center light, wall sconces can illuminate those areas.  Lighting designers are finding that many customers do not like a lot of recessed lighting. They want softer lighting that can create a mood and wall sconces are much more effective at that than recessed, even if they are dimmed.  Recessed lighting fixtures send light in only one direction, generating strong shadows. Wall sconces send illumination in many directions, using the wall as a reflector to project light into the room and create warm shadows only achieved with wall sconces.

Today’s lighting manufacturers strive to create lighting wall sconces that look as good off as when it is lit. The result is functional artwork.  You can create a point of interest with a decorative wall sconce; it can fill a wall.  One application specified by a lighting designer was to install three sconces in a row, vertically, alongside a tall foyer staircase. These wall sconces served as sculptural accents for the blank surface, creating a unique and beautiful space.

Wall sconces are also ideal in media rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms and bathrooms.  Even though wall sconces have always been the best choice (for master baths), it is amazing the number of customers and even professionals such as electricians and architects who want to use only one or two recessed lights over the sink.  Instead of the harsh shadows generated from recessed fixtures, a wall sconce on either side of the mirror provides direct light on the face, making grooming tasks easier using wall sconces.

What’s the best bulb type for wall sconces? The answer depends on how you’ll be using the wall sconces.  Only incandescent wall sconces can be easily and reliably dimmed.  If the wall sconces will be in an area where changing the bulb is difficult, it’s best to opt for fluorescent bulb because of their long life rating.

Local Hobby Stores and Online Hobby Shops

Since you are reading this article, you are likely already a hobby store expert. However, don’t you ever wonder what life was like before online hobby stores were around? Or, even worse when hobby stores were around but nowhere near you? Life was a mess.

In order to build a model or get a train set you had to just buy whatever pieces you could find at a local toy shop. As you well know, that isn’t a whole lot. Plus, if there were any problems along the way you would be stuck buying a whole new set.

That’s just one of the reasons having a online hobby shop around is so helpful. Whether you build model boats or like to tinker with remote control helicopters, life is just a lot simpler when you have a place to look at everything, or a store to go to.

For those of you who haven’t experienced a bona fide hobby store you might still be in the dark. They are not brightly colored kid filled places. In fact, they are typically filled with middle aged men who occasionally bring their kids along. The staff is much more knowledgeable than you would ever need and in general the place is a lot tidier than you would expect.

For the devout model builder precision is key. A great hobby store reflects that. Items are typically in sections by model type or material, and there are often finished models around as the décor.

The vast majority of hobby stores are family businesses though not always the case. Either way a successful hobby store is one that caters to many different hobbies and has a great staff. Online hobby stores are great on the fact that they have almost everything you could need, and can get you the parts you might not be able to find anywhere else.

Another great perk of knowing a local hobby store is the community it represents. People who build models are sometimes stereotyped the hermit type. They sit at home tinkering instead of out and about with people. Though model building does require a bit of solitude, many of these builders get together to “talk shop” as it were about their pieces.

For example, if you build model boats there is probably a group of people who meet up to launch boats at a local park. Just like anything else, likeminded people can appreciate the nuances of a hobby and the skill it requires. It’s nice to get together with a group of people that enjoy the same things. Your local hobby store probably has advertisements for groups like this. And if they don’t, you can always start one!

For the internet savvy, model pieces can also be purchased over the internet. No matter where you live, a online hobby store can get you exactly what you need.

Just make sure to check out all your options. You might find one store carries a lot more models or inventory for your particular hobby. You might also find that one store has been around for fifteen years while another just two. Loyalty isn’t a necessity when it comes to hobby shops, but you will find that you will naturally go back to a store that feels right. Good luck on your search.

Kitchen lighting is one of the most important room in your house that you need think about when adding new lighting to your home. The kitchen needs to be lit up for a number of reasons, and there are many different types of kitchen lighting to think about. The first think you want to keep in mind is that you have enough light in the kitchen to be able to prepare food, lighting to entertain guests, and under cabinet and task lighting. Task lighting main job is making the kitchen functional, its lighting where you need it to do specific tasks. Accent lighting is always low voltage; these are sometimes displayed in display cabinets, under counters, or areas that don’t need a lot of light. Accent lighting is very simple and affordable, but is a necessary to make the kitchen feel complete.

Next, you have ambient lighting. This is one kind of lighting that can instantly transform your kitchen and it is usually the least thought about.
